Outdoor Clock Sundial

What You Will Need:

  • A straight stick
  • 12 rocks or shells
  • Paint or markers
  • A sunny spot outside

How to set up:

  1. Find a sunny area.  You will need a space that is between 10 and 12 inches in diameter .
  2. Write numbers 1-12 on your rocks or shells and let them dry.  You can get creative and decorate them any way you wish.
  3. Put one end of your stick in the ground, you will need to watch the stick over the next few hours to see if it needs to be tilted. (you can make predictions of which way the shadow will move) HINT: When the sun is directly overhead at 12:00 noon, you want the stick’s shadow to be the shortest.
  4. Once you find the shortest shadow place your 12 at the top.
  5. Check the sticks shadow each hour to place the rest of the numbers (all numbers should be spaced apart equally)
